Reading your TrackMan numbers — a beginner's guide

The first time you see a TrackMan readout, it's a wall of numbers. Most of them you can ignore at first. These are the four worth watching.

Ball speed

How fast the ball leaves the face. It's the single biggest driver of distance, and it's mostly a product of how well you strike the centre of the club. Chasing "swing harder" rarely helps — clean contact does.

Launch angle

The angle the ball starts on relative to the ground. Too low and you lose carry; too high and you balloon it. Different clubs want different windows.

Spin rate

Backspin keeps the ball in the air but too much costs you distance, especially with the driver. If your drives climb and drop straight down, high spin is usually why.

Carry distance

How far the ball flies before it lands — the number that actually matters for club selection, more than total distance which depends on roll.
